Geophysicists from China, the U.S. and Japan showed that the core of the moon should be surrounded by a liquid layer. The authors came to this conclusion after receiving the result of a computer simulation. The study has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
The liquid layer is a thin viscous medium between the asthenosphere – the lower mantle of the Earth’s satellite – and its core, which surrounds the nucleus unequally. With it is associated the attenuation of the seismic waves as it has been shown by the computer simulation results.
Аccording to the experts the reason for the appearing of this thin liquid layer is the friction in the bowels of the satellite due to its gravitational interaction with the Earth.
The usual scheme of the structure of the moon suggests that in the center of the moon is a nucleus which is surrounded by a thick layer of mantle closed on the top with a crust.
Scientists now need to check the validity of their theory. If they prove that it is true, the following question remains open: why the liquid layer did not harden for those 4.5 billion years, when supposedly the Earth-Moon system has been formed? It is possible that the physicists will need to change their point of view about the origin of the Earth’s moon.
