Prominent British scientists blamed the UK government for trying to pass a bill authorizing the creation of „genetically modified babies“ wrote The Independent.
The essence of the claims is limited to the definition of genetic modification, which is used in the government document. In the present form of the document the mitochondrial donor does not appear, because in this case there is no interference in the nuclear DNA.
The essence of the method is that during the process of in vitro fertilization the „spoiled“ mitochondrial DNA in the egg has been replaced by a healthy one taken from another woman. This creates a chimeric egg, where the core (and consequently, the nuclear DNA) has been taken from one woman and the cytoplasm, which contains the mitochondrial DNA, from another.
