Japanese immigration officials of Narita Airport began testing an automated face recognition system, which compares the faces of tourists with their photos in the passport. The system is designed to enhance the effectiveness of border control before the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020 in Tokyo.
Currently the immigration officials make a personal inspection of the documents to the tourists. The system is extremely simple. The tourists have been photographed with a special camera that reads their facial characteristics. The system then compares the image with the image that is stored on a chip embedded in the passport of the tourist.
