The rheumatoid arthritis, which affects up to 1% of the population, causes pain and inflammation of the joints, destroying the cartilage and the bone. Associates of the ETH Zurich have developed a special approach in the treatment of arthritis, which they have tested on mice. According to scientists, the animals were completely cured of the disease.
The drug is a base, a mixture of the two active ingredients. The first component is present in the body, this is the immune agent interleukin 4 (IL-4). It is known, that by rheumatoid arthritis it is capable to protect the bone and cartilage. There is an antibody together with IL-4. It binds to a protein found only in the inflamed tissues in certain diseases.
This way IL-4 falls guaranteed within the diseased tissue. This increases the efficiency and reduces the risk of side effects. Besides the pure mixture of the two components, the researchers tested it in combination with anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone. The treatment started as soon as in the laboratory rodents appeared visible signs of arthritis.
When the dual molecule and the drug have been used independently, the scientists were only slowing the progression of the disease. But applying them together, this helped the symptoms go away for a few days. In this case, the immune system returns to its normal condition. Tests on humans will begin next year, promissed the scientists.
