Robots got X-ray vision – thanks to WiFi radiation.
The new robots, developed in the University of California, Santa Barbara, although they can not win, have an unique capacity: they are able to see through the walls, using WiFi signals.
According to the technology, the robots have to work in pairs. The one submits radio transmission, while the second, located on the opposite side of the obstacle, measures their strength. Since walls and other spatial objects reduce the signal strength, the radio receiver can distinguish between empty and occupied volume, and in this way the robot creates an accurate spatial map.
This is not the first robot that can „see“ through the concrete. A few years ago, was presented the robot lifeguard Cougar 20-H with many sensors performing a similar task. The opportunities of the new robots depend only on WiFi.
