The scientists have found fossils that show that once the world was inhabited by giant penguins, writes The Independent.
Two bones – a fragment of wing and paw – were found on Seymour Island, near Antarctica. The finding of a team of Argentine Museum of La Plata has allowed the experts to compile a full portrait of this kind. For example, researchers have found that the height of these penguins has been more than 2 meters from the tip of its beak to the tip of paws. Their weight was 115 kg.
For comparison – the height of the current largest penguins – emperor – is just 1.36 meters and the weight it less than 46 kg.
According to the magazine New Scientist, even earlier the scientists have found bones of penguins of the type Palaeeudyptes klekowskii. But this kind of scientists did not know anything except that it has inhabited the Earth about 40 million years ago.
Carolina Acosta Ospitaleche from the Museum of La Plata, told the magazine New Scientist, that it was „an amazing time when 10 to 14 species of penguins have lived near the Antarctic coast.“
Previously it was thought that the growth of the highest penguins, who have ever lived, did not exceed one and a half meters, says The Independent.
