This unique natural phenomenon is located near the town of Sidi Bel Abbes in Algeria. In it are no fishes and no plants. It is filled with inks instead of water, and the inks are toxic to the living organisms and are only suitable for writing.
The phenomenon of the ink lake remained long time a mystery to scientists. Allthough finally it became clear how such an unusual substance appeared in the lake instead of water. It turns out that in this lake two rivers flow. The one of them in dissolved form contains a plurality of iron salts. The second one contains a variety of organic compounds, which came from peatbogs. Interacting, the waters of these rivers create ink as a result of chemical reactions.
For the local people it is a legendary lake. Some consider it a creation of the devil, while others actively use it. The lake has many names. The most popular of them – Ink, Eye of the Devil, Black Lake.
