Scientists from the Institute Weisman, Israel showed the world’s first photonic router – quantum device based on a single atom, which allows targeting of single photons. This is a big step for the challenges facing the creation of quantum computers.
The core of the device is an atom which can be switched between two states. This condition is the submission of a single photon in optical fiber. Then, in response to this impulse atom reflecting or transmitting the next incoming photon, depending on its activation state.
The switch is controlled exclusively by single photons – did not need any external field. Photons in this case do not carry information but only managed device.
This achievement was made possible thanks to the skillful combination of the two technologies. One of them – it is a laser and the cooling of the grip atoms. Second – producing high quality optical resonators ultraminiatyurni that can connect directly with optical fibers.
